CANADIAN PRAIRIE CROPLAND PROJECT

The demand for low-carbon foods is critical to the sustainable food system. Nestled in the thriving grain belt of Western Canada, the Carbon RX Canadian Prairie Cropland Project is a pioneering initiative seamlessly blending carbon reduction with carbon removal practices creating high-quality nature-based carbon credits.

Reducing and Removing Carbon from the Canadian Prairies

The Origins of Life

Soil Organic Matter (SOM) is a measure of soil health and fertility. Soils high in organic matter are high in carbon, hold more water, and are more fertile. First Nations Elders know the importance of healthy soils and taking care of Mother Earth. Regenerative management practices heal the soil aligning with First Nation values and protect the land for 7 Generations to come.

A Robust Carbon Sink

The Carbon RX Canadian Prairie Cropland Project is transforming 120,189 hectares (296,993 acres) of farmland into a carbon sink for the next 20 years. Combining minimal tillage with reduced nitrogen fertilizer and fuel usage, the Project enhances soil carbon storage and cuts GHG emissions. This approach extends beyond carbon reduction, focusing on enriching soil fertility, protecting ecosystems and water resources, and respecting local First Nations agricultural values. Anticipating a reduction of 81,175 tonnes of CO2e annually, the Project exemplifies a commitment to a sustainable, resilient agricultural future.

Environmental Benefits

  • Ensures 120,189 hectares (296,993 acres) of prime agricultural land remain committed to regenerative practices for 20 years

  • Estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81,175 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually

  • Implements minimal tillage and enhanced soil management practices, significantly improving soil health and fertility

  • Directly supports local ecosystems and water conservation in one of Canada's key agricultural regions

  • Aligns with the principles of sustainable farming, ensuring long-term environmental stewardship
