Addressing the Climate Crisis: Eco-Growth’s Innovative Approach to Reducing Food Waste in Landfills

At PeriCarbon, we’re proud to support our members in their efforts to combat climate change. Today, we want to spotlight the work of Eco-Growth Environmental, an Alberta-based company that’s making significant strides in addressing one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions: food waste in landfills.

Each year, approximately 931 million tonnes of food waste contribute to 8-10% of global carbon emissions. Alarmingly, about 17% of global food production may go wasted. This is a crisis we can no longer ignore.

Eco-Growth Environmental has risen to this challenge by developing award-winning technologies designed to divert landfill wastes and convert them into zero-emission thermal energy. Their solutions deal with waste streams at the source where they are generated, eliminating the need for transportation of waste materials.

Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is emitted from landfills as a result of the decay of organic waste over time under anaerobic conditions. Food waste, which comprises about 24% of municipal solid waste disposed of in landfills, contributes to more methane emissions than any other landfilled materials. An estimated 58% of the fugitive methane emissions from municipal solid waste landfills are from landfilled food waste.

While total emissions from municipal solid waste landfills are decreasing, methane emissions from landfill food waste are increasing. This is a problem that Eco-Growth Environmental is addressing head-on.

Deploying their technology, EGOR, has key benefits:

1.Waste Reduction: Eco-Growth’s technology is designed to divert landfill wastes, reducing the volume of waste that ends up in landfills.

2.Clean Energy Production: The technology converts waste into clean energy, providing a sustainable energy source and further reducing the environmental impact of waste.

3.Cost Savings: By managing waste at the source where it is generated, Eco-Growth’s technology eliminates the need for transportation of waste materials, potentially resulting in significant cost savings.

4.Carbon Emissions Reduction: The process of converting waste into energy helps to reduce carbon emissions, contributing to efforts to combat climate change.

5.Innovation: Eco-Growth is committed to developing innovative and sustainable technology solutions to environmental challenges.
